The Story of Little England
Nuwara Eliya, meaning 'City of Light', was founded by Samuel Baker in 1846. It became a sanctuary for British civil servants and planters who sought refuge from the tropical heat of the lowlands, earning it the nickname 'Little England'.
Pre-Colonial Era
The region was a dense wilderness known to local hunters and hermits. Legend says the area was used by King Ravana to hide Princess Sita in the Ashoka Vatika (now Hakgala Gardens).
British Discovery (1818)
Dr. John Davy discovered the valley in 1818. Governor Edward Barnes later established a sanatorium and a holiday residence, recognizing the potential of the cool climate.
The Tea Revolution (1860s)
After the coffee blight, James Taylor introduced tea to the hills. Nuwara Eliya became the heart of the tea industry, with vast estates transforming the landscape forever.
Modern Era
Today, it remains Sri Lanka's premier hill station, preserving its colonial charm through architecture like the Queen's Cottage, General's House, and the Grand Hotel.
