AnuradhapuraThe Sacred City
Where ancient wisdom meets eternal peace

The Birth of a Sacred Capital
King Pandukabhaya established Anuradhapura as the capital of Sri Lanka in 377 BCE, creating the hydrological and spiritual bedrock of Sri Lankan civilization. As the great urban planner, he delineated zones for trade, sanitation, and cemeteries, positioning the city strategically near the Malvathu Oya river. The city would serve as the capital for approximately 1,400 years—one of the most durable centers of political power in South Asia.
Named after the star Anura (Scorpio) under which it was founded
Capital for 1,400 years (4th century BCE to 11th century CE)
Population reached over 1 million at its zenith
Sophisticated network of man-made reservoirs (wewas) for irrigation

Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi
Theri Sanghamitta, daughter of Emperor Ashoka, brought a cutting from the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya under which Buddha attained enlightenment. Planted in 249 BCE on a high terrace (muluwa), this Ficus religiosa has grown for over 2,300 years, making it the oldest living human-planted tree with a known planting date in the world. The tree is surrounded by a golden railing (ran veta) with branches supported by golden crutches.
Oldest documented tree planted by humans in world history
Living presence of the Buddha for devotees
Protected by golden fence and ancient walls against elephants
Best visited at dawn or dusk during Theva (service) times

Monuments to Eternity
King Dutugemunu, the warrior-king who unified Sri Lanka, initiated the "Heroic Age" of Sinhalese architecture after his victory over King Elara in 161 BCE. He commissioned the magnificent Ruwanwelisaya (Great Stupa) standing 338 feet tall with a circumference of 950 feet, featuring the iconic Hasthiprakara—a wall of 344 life-sized elephant sculptures. King Mahasen later built Jetavanaramaya at 400 feet, the third-tallest structure in the ancient world, using approximately 93 million fired bricks.
